Reading Like a Translator I: What Did Don Quixote Eat on Saturdays?

Don Quixote’s woes, from a translator’s point of view, begin on page one, where Cervantes writes that the poor knight ate “lentils on Friday, eggs and bacon on Saturday, and a pigeon extraordinaire on Sundays.” The problem is that Cervantes didn’t write “eggs and bacon,” he wrote “duelos y quebrantos,” a dish that no one in 300 years has been able to translate.
